Directions to Trailhead
The Cove Hardwood Nature Trail is located at the Chimneys Picnic Area on the Tennessee side of the park. The easiest way to get there is by driving along Newfound Gap Road (Highway 441). The route is a popular scenic drive, so you’ll get a taste of the natural beauty before you even set foot on the trail. Make sure you have a Smoky Mountain parking pass on your vehicle before you set off. Go online and print yours or get one at the park. Stop by any visitor center or use the automated kiosk!
Trail Description
The Cove Hardwood Nature Trail is an easy hike that is around 0.75 miles round trip. The first part of the trail climbs up several steps. Use caution as you step over the rocks and roots. When you get up the steps, there is a junction with an arrow pointing to the right. Follow the loop until you come back to the junction. The ascent then becomes more gradual.
There is no wrong time to do this easy hike. Admire the pretty wildflowers that bloom in the spring and the vibrant foliage in the fall. As for animals, you may encounter bears, deer, and wild turkeys. (Stay at least 150 feet from big wildlife). There are streams that are filled with rich populations of fish. If you look up, you’ll see many birds flying about. Listen closely to hear all the different chirps. There are over 240 documented bird species in GSMNP! Stop along the hike to snap a few photos. The natural scenery makes an excellent backdrop. Look at them later and remember all the fun you had on this hike.
About Chimneys Picnic Area
After you have finished your hike, have a picnic at the Chimneys Picnic Area. Sharing a meal is an awesome way to get your energy back up and spend extra time with your hiking group. The picnic area is open seasonally from April to December. It features 68 picnic sites that have tables and charcoal grills. When you’re done with your meal, be sure to throw all trash into the designated garbage cans. Some animals have a keen sense of smell, and the scent may attract wildlife. It also impacts the natural beauty of the area! It should stay just as stunning for the next visitors!
