Directions to Trailhead
The trailhead for the Oconaluftee River Trail is located behind the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, which is 2 miles north of Cherokee, NC. The best way to get there is via Newfound Gap Road (US-441). This is an excellent scenic drive that has breathtaking views year-round. Don’t forget to put a Smoky Mountain parking pass in your vehicle before you hit the trail. The Oconaluftee River Trail is an easy route that is 3 miles roundtrip. The short distance, gravel path, and minimal elevation gain make this trail ideal for those who want a short but scenic hike. The trail has several bridges, which make it easy to navigate the wet areas. Hikers can also stand on them to admire the water below. Kids will love seeing all the fish swim about. You can even go fishing here!
Additionally, the area has a rich population of wildlife. You may have the exciting opportunity to see an animal during your hike. The Oconaluftee area of the North Carolina Smokies is known for having a rich population of elk and black bears. If you see one of these bigger animals, maintain a distance of 150 feet or more away from them.
