A Smoky Mountain hike is a great activity that allows you to enjoy fresh air and the peace of nature. Are you planning to hike for the first time? Luckily, we've got some tips to make the process easier. Explore this guide to preparing for a smooth hike in the Smoky Mountains:

Pick A Trail

Before your hike, do some research on the many trails in the Smokies. This will help you choose the right route for your skill level, whether you’re a beginner or an expert hiker. Don’t push yourself too hard. It is all about having fun!

Pack A Lunch

No matter what GMSNP hiking trail you choose, you will need energy. It is very important to stay hydrated. Pack multiple water bottles, as some trailheads may not have a water fountain. As for small snacks, jerky, trail mix, fruit, and cheese are good options.

Since there are many scenic picnic areas throughout the national park, pack a bigger meal to eat after your hike. A picnic will allow you to spend a little extra time outside. While you eat, make sure to keep any uneaten food concealed to avoid attracting wildlife and pick up any trash as well.

Check The Weather

Before you hike in the Smoky Mountains, check the weather. In the lower elevations, temperatures tend to be cooler in the morning and warm up in the afternoon. In the higher elevations, temperatures can be as much as 20 degrees cooler. You should also watch for rain or snow showers. You can still hike in these conditions with the right gear, such as boots, an umbrella, and a warm coat. Keep in mind that the weather may cause trail closures. Watch the Smokies Road Info page (@SmokiesRoadsNPS) for the most up-to-date information.

Buy A Parking Tag

If you plan to be out on the trail and leave your car parked longer than 15 minutes, you will need a parking pass for your vehicle. You can purchase your daily or weekly tag online for the days you will be at the park. Print out the receipt to leave in your vehicle while you’re on the trail.

With your parking tag purchased, you can go straight to the trailhead to begin your hike. It is still wise to arrive early because the purchase of a parking tag does not guarantee a parking spot. If you need a parking tag while at the Smokies, just stop by the closest visitor center. Some trailheads even have automated machines!
