Starting from the Sugarlands Visitor Center in Gatlinburg, you only have to drive 1.6 miles south along Newfound Gap Road to reach the trailhead. Keep in mind that the Huskey Gap trailhead only has space for 6 vehicles. It is a good idea to carpool if your hiking group is large. If you do have a vehicle in the park, remember your Smoky Mountain parking pass.

Trail Description

The Huskey Gap Trail is considered moderate in difficulty. The route is 4.2 miles roundtrip with 1,270 feet of elevation gain. You will see an old stone fence less than a mile from the trailhead. Visitors love to do this hike in the warmer months because they can see lots of wildflowers; in fact, this hike is even on the program for the Great Smoky Mountains Association’s annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage!

At 1.1 miles from the trailhead, you will see a small stream named Flint Rock Branch. Take a moment to spot all the little fish swimming about. At 2.1 miles from the trailhead, hikers will arrive at the Sugarland Mountain trail junction. You can keep going a little further, where the trail connects with the Little River Trail, or you can turn around and head back to the trailhead.

Fun Fact: This trail is named after Sam Huskey. He and his wife Alice lived in the area and even owned and operated a small hotel, the Skyuka Inn! In the late 19th century, the trail itself was initially a crude road constructed by the residents of what is now known as Elkmont.

Tips for Hiking the Huskey Gap Trail

  • Just beyond the trailhead on Newfound Gap Road is the Carlos C. Campbell overlook, so be sure to check it out and admire the mountain views before or after your hike! You could even stop for a snack or quick picnic at this pull-off.
  • The Huskey Gap Trail also connects to the Little River Trail, making it easy for you to access Huskey Branch Falls and explore nearby trails, including Cucumber Gap and Jake’s Creek.
  • Start your hike early in the morning and plan to spend the entire day in Elkmont; plus, you have a better chance of getting a parking space at the trailhead!
  • If you’re in a group with multiple vehicles, make it a one-way hike by parking at both the Huskey Gap trailhead and either Fighting Gap Road near Laurel Falls (Sugarlands Mountain Trail) or Elkmont (Little River Trail).
