In the Smoky Mountains, every season is hiking season! Proper preparation is key to a safe and fun time. Read on to get excellent insights for the whole year! This way, you’ll always be prepared! Here is our list of helpful tips for hiking in the Smoky Mountains during every season:
Autumn
Visitors love coming to the Smokies in the fall. The vibrant leaf colors reach their peak between mid-October and early November. Additionally, the cooler weather creates excellent conditions for hiking as well.

If you plan to explore higher elevations (areas above 4,000 feet), be sure to dress warmly. These spots can be as much as 20 degrees cooler. A good outfit choice is breathable long pants and a short-sleeved shirt. Bring a jacket and tie it around your waist to leave your hands free.
Arrive early to get a good parking spot and avoid some of the busy season crowds.

Winter
Winter is considered the slowest season in the Smoky Mountains, but visitors can still have a fun time. Experience a real-life winter wonderland as you admire the blanket of snow on the ground and the icicles hanging from the branches. The time change in late fall means less daylight, so it is very important to keep track of time on your hike.
Other winter hiking tips include: dress in layers and include accessories like a hat and gloves, and wear quality hiking boots to maintain proper footing in icy places. A pair of trekking poles is helpful to hold onto, especially for trails with significant elevation gain.

Spring
Similar to fall, spring in the Smoky Mountains is a time for milder temperatures. Visitors love to see leaves on the tall trees and colorful wildflowers on the ground. Wildflower season peaks in mid to late April for many species. While you can dress lighter in the lower elevations, keep in mind that higher elevations see snow until April.

Pack an umbrella and wear waterproof shoes to be prepared for sudden rain showers. In areas with streams and rivers, do not continue your hike if the water is overflowing.

Summer
Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air when you embark on a summer hike. Opt for hikes with a waterfall or a swimming hole to give you a fun way to cool off. Put on sunscreen and wear a hat to keep the sun out of your face. You should also apply bug spray. Eat a good meal beforehand and drink plenty of water as you go along to keep your energy up in the hot temperatures.
The summer season is a popular time for wildlife like bears and deer. For your safety, keep a distance of at least 150 feet away from any animals you see. Look out for signs of bears, which include tracks and claw marks on trees.
