Trail Description

cosby nature trail

The Cosby Nature Trail is a 1-mile loop with little elevation gain. The namesake is a creek that the route follows. It will be relaxing to listen to the calm rushing of the water. Even though the trail is flat, the terrain is not paved. Look out for tree roots along the ground as well as muddy patches after heavy rain. Sturdy waterproof shoes with good traction are a must-have for this hike. While the trail has footbridges to cross the water, there is a shallow section at the end where hikers have to cross over rocks. Do not attempt to cross if the water is high after a heavy rain!

Trail Highlights

About halfway through the hike, there is a small rock “beach” area. This is a great place to stop and eat some snacks. Keep food concealed when you’re not eating, as the scent may attract wildlife. It is also important to pick up any trash and keep the area beautiful for future hikers. While you’re here, snap a few pictures as well. It can be a formal group photo or impromptu selfies. The scenic area will be an excellent backdrop for all photos.

One of the best times to hike this trail is in the spring because there are pretty wildflowers everywhere. The Smokies boasts over 1,500 species of flowers. Look for mountain laurel, trilliums, rhododendrons, and more! Kids will love seeing if they can spot all the colors of the rainbow. While the flowers are pretty to look at, picking them is prohibited. They only bloom for a short time, and all visitors should see them to their full glory. Take a picture instead! Another part of the area’s scenery is the animals. If you have the opportunity to see a big animal, such as a black bear or deer, maintain a safe distance of at least 150 feet. As for smaller creatures, refrain from picking them up.
